BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission will take Belgium to the European Court of Justice, Europe's highest court, for failing to end discriminatory double taxation on foreign dividends, according to a report in Belgian daily 'La Libre Belgique'.The newspaper says it has seen documents saying the commission plans to continue proceedings after in received a 'negative' reply to a letter of are asoned opinion' sent to Belgium last July.The next stage in legal proceedings is a case in the ECJ.In July, the commission requested that Belgium end alleged discriminatory laws on personal tax deductions for residents with foreign source income and the taxation of dividends paid by foreign companies.The commission said that under the Belgian tax system, there is no double taxation for domestic dividends while there is for so-called 'inbound' dividends.frances.robinson@afxnews.comfr/jfrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
