BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said it is taking Belgium to the European Court of Justice, Europe's highest court, for failing to end discriminatory double taxation on foreign dividends. In July, the commission requested that Belgium end alleged discriminatory laws on personal tax deductions for residents with foreign source income and the taxation of dividends paid by foreign companies. The commission said that under the Belgian tax system, there is no double taxation for domestic dividends while there is for so-called 'inbound' dividends. After failing to respond to this demand, the EU has referred the matter to the ECJ.simon.zekaria@thomson.comsz/lamCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
