LONDON: Popular budget airline Easyjet yesterday decided to add another 20 Airbus A319s to its fleet of 107 aircraft.
The airline said it was exercising an option of buying additional aircraft that came as part of the 2002 deal when it had purchased 120 new planes from Airbus.
According to the December 2002 sale agreement with Airbus, Easyjet had the option of buying an additional 120 aircraft at the same basic price and terms but taking inflation into account. The latest purchase will cost the airline £520m which will be funded from the airline’s own cash resources and debt financing. Easyjet is understood to have received a discount on yesterday’s purchase.
The budget carrier said it was planning new routes which will be announced in “due course”. Globally, Easyjet operates on 224 routes.
Airbus will deliver yesterday’s order of twenty A319s between 2008 and 2009. The plane maker has already delivered 59 A319s from its previous order and the remaining 61 would be delivered before 2008 ending. 2005 has been a good year for both plane manufacturers Airbus and rival Boeing who has also booked orders from Ryanair for 70 jumbo jets. Increasing air traffic helped aircraft sales reach a new high from its 1998 record of 1,162 planes.
