WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. (AFX) - Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Tuesday its Pliva d.d. unit received Food and Drug Administration approval to sell a generic version of Pfizer Inc.'s Zithromax antibiotic.The company said Croatia-based Pliva received approval for 500-milligram vials of injectable azithromycin, the active ingredient in Zithromax. Barr plans to launch the product in the first quarter.The antibiotic is approved to treat community-acquired pneumonia and pelvic inflammatory disease.Barr shares rose 14 cents to $55.66 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
