(updating with details on Zometa, Tasigna approval process)ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Novartis AG currently has twenty-five oncology drug candidates in either the phase I or phase II stage, likely to result in at least one new cancer drug approval or new indication over the next seven years, the group's head of oncology Margaret Dean said.Novartis also has a number of cancer drugs in Phase III clinical trials, she said, speaking at the company's OncoTalk presentation in Zurich.New drugs typically go through three sets of clinical trials, known as phases I-III, before being submitted to regulators for approval.She also said that Novartis expects to file its blockbuster treatment Zometa for an additional indication for bone loss associated with aromatase inhibitors, a condition known as AIBL, later this month.Zometa last year recorded worldwide sales of 1.3 bln usd.Regarding cancer drug Tasigna, Dean said she expects the drug to be approved as second line treatment in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the US and Europe some time later this year.andrew.ge.thompson@thomson.comat/rfw/at/sljCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
