WARSAW (Thomson Financial) - Poland's government should keep control over the world's sixth-largest copper miner KGHM, a senior official from the country's Civic Platform party was quoted as saying after the party won the general election on Sunday. In an interview with daily Dziennik, the party's chief economic spokesman Zbigniew Chlebowski also said it would aim to lower corporate income tax to 10 pct from 19 pct and hopes to be able to abolish a capital gains tax.He said that power infrastructure operators, local refiners and KGHM, which is 42-pct state-owned, should remain under the government's control.'Right now KGHM is a large resources company, which should benefit from state control,' Chlebowski told the daily. The outgoing conservative government has put KGHM on a list of 'strategic companies,' in which it has the right to veto some decisions taken by their management. The move has prompted criticism from the European Union's executive body.Chlebowski said the European Commission is likely to 'turn a blind eye' on the government's veto powers if the company's shareholders include investors from the EU member states.piotr.skolimowski@thomson.com +48 22 447 24 36ps1/sljCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
