LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Britain is ready to push for tougher sanctions against Iran both through the UN and EU, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said.'We are absolutely clear that we are ready and will push for further sanctions against Iran,' he told reporters after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert here.'We will work through the United Nations to achieve that. We are prepared also to have tougher European Union sanctions,' he added. 'We do not support the nuclear ambitions of that country.'The Israeli leader added: 'Economic sanctions are effective, but they are not sufficient. So there should be more... until Iran will stop its nuclear programme.'Olmert's meeting with Brown was the first since the latter took over from Tony Blair as prime minister in June. On Monday in Paris he won strong French support for his efforts to halt Iran's nuclear drive.TFN.newsdesk@thomson.comfp/jfrCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
