BRUSSELS (AFX) - Pharmaceutical group UCB SA said its Cimzia treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, in combination with methotrexate, prevented structural damage of the joints to a significantly greater degree than placebo plus methotrexate after one's treatment.

UCB said the results shown by radiographic data from a key phase three study of Cimzia were 'significant'.

'(The study) achieved its co-primary endpoint, the inhibition of progression of structural damage,' said the group.

'The study also showed that in both active treatment arms Cimzia improved the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis to a clinically statistically significantly greater degree than the placebo arm in patients who had inadequately responded to methotrexate alone,' it added.

Similar results were observed with a second pivotal phase three study of Cimzia's subcutaneous liquid formulation.

It said effective results in the treatment of the condition can be achieved with a 400mg total monthly dose of the drug.

Further data from phase three studies will be presented at international rheumatology congresses later this year.

Preparation for a licence submission in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is ongoing, with filing planned in the second half of 2007.
