COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a unit of drug maker Wyeth, said late Tuesday the Food and Drug Administration approved the Lybrel birth control pill that allows a woman to put her period on hold. The product, which contains 90 micrograms of the hormone levonorgestrel and 20 micrograms of the hormone ethinyl estradiol, was approved as a 365-day-per-year birth control pill without a placebo phase. Standard birth control pills regimen includes three weeks of active pills and a placebo or pill-free week during a woman's period.Wyeth expects to have Lybrel in pharmacies by July. The company said that most women in clinical trials experienced some breakthrough bleeding in the first three to six months of taking the pill, and that the pill did not delay a return to fertility or a normal period.Wyeth shares rose 23 cents to $58.65 in electronic premarket trading after closing at $58.42 on Tuesday.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
