LONDON: Women should spend more time in the sun to get adequate amount of vitamin D, so that they can fight the scourge of brittle bones, advises Women's Health Concern, a charity.
It said it is concerned about the increasing number of people who spend more time indoors as a result of the sedentary life they lead. This deprives them of the vitamin which in turn make them susceptible to osteoporosis, especially in the post-menopausal stage.
A recent study has come out with evidence that as much as 97 per cent of patients treated for hip fractures were found to be deficient in vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones.
Women's Health Concern's chief executive Karen Winterhalter said the easiest way for people to have adequate measure of the vitamin is to spend more time under the sun. Otherwise, it is imperative that they take supplements. Studies have found that the body's ability to absorb vitamin D direct from sunlight decreases with age.
Vitamin D and calcium supplements are a central part of the treatment for osteoporosis. Vitamin D is integral for the body to absorb calcium from the intestine, but unlike calcium it is not readily
available in the diet. A day's requirement of vitamin D from diet can be obtained only when a person eats nine eggs or drink 30 litres of milk.
The Women's Health Concern campaign is being sponsored by pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dome Limited. Vitamin D currently accounts for only 4 per cent of all vitamin sales.
