TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - The Japanese government plans to make a prototype of a next-generation stealth fighter aircraft, the first new fighter designed here for 30 years, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Tuesday. The newspaper quoted unidentified officials in the defense ministry as saying the ministry would include funds to develop the manned prototype in its budgetary request for the fiscal year ending March 2009.The defense ministry is hoping to keep its technology up to date and to gain an edge in negotiations with the US when it selects new fighter aircraft, the newspaper said. Japan is hoping to buy F-22 Raptors from the US, but US law prohibits the export of these stealth aircraft. The Yomiuri said the prototype would likely cost tens of billions of yen over 10 years. It is unclear if the aircraft will go into production because of the huge cost, the newspaper said.No immediate comment was available from the defense ministry. The government here has not supported the development of an indigenous fighter since the F-1 in the 1970s.(1 US dollar = 120.55 yen)afp/jmmb/jmCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
