EDP confirms talks with Sonatrach on possible partnership |

LISBON (AFX) - EDP Energias de Portugal SA confirmed that it is in 'preliminary conversations' with Algerian energy group Sonatrach regarding a possible parnership in the natural gas business.In a filing with stock market regulator CMVM, EDP said that 'these conversations continued during the Portuguese Government's visit to Algeria, concluded (Monday). The works developed by both companies enabled the definition of some general aspects orienting the contacts to be maintained.'The company did not provide further details regarding the talks.Last weekend, after arriving in Algiers to attend the Portugal-Algeria summit prime minister Jose Socrates said that the Portuguese and Algerian governments support a strategic partnership between EDP and Sonatrach.Press reports have said that Sonatrach could acquire a 5 pct stake in EDP.luis.morais@thomson.comlm/anCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
