Greek shares higher in afternoon trade, led by banks, PPC |

ATHENS (AFX) - Greek shares were up by more than 1 pct in afternoon trade, finding support in the banking sector -- the National Bank of Greece in particular -- and a rebound at electricity utility PPC, traders said.At 1.24 pm, the ASE General Index was up 1.09 pct at 4,684.86, with the blue chip index gaining 1.26 pct to 2,562.07.Mid caps were up 1.30 pct at 5,498.17 and the small cap index up 1.15 pct at 913.47.PPC rebounded after the company announced that former Toyota Motor Europe executive Panagiotis Athanasopoulos will be its new chief executive, after the recent resignation of Dimitris Maniatakis.PPC was up 2.98 pct at 21.40 eur.The National Bank of Greece led the banking sector higher, up 3.54 pct at 39.14 eur. Alpha Bank was up 2.16 pct at 25.54 eur, Eurobank added 0.75 pct to 29.68 eur, Piraeus Bank gained 0.99 pct to 26.46 eur and Bank of Cyprus was up 0.68 pct at 11.90 eur.Amongst banking stocks only Marfin Popular Bank was lower, down 1.17 pct at 8.46 eur.Intralot's shares gained more than 2 pct at 26.38 eur, while Greek telecoms operator OTE was up 0.34 pct at 23.32 eur.Source - Euro2day Newswirenewsdesk@afxnews.comgp/harCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
