MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Italy's minister for economic development, Pierluigi Bersani, said the government does not rule out the proclamation of a state of emergency for the power generation sector some time soon, in light of Italy's mounting water shortages, Italian news agency Radiocor reported.

'The situation must be monitored very carefully. The declaration of a state of emergency can in no way be ruled out,' Bersani said, speaking in Turkey.

Peak power demand in Italy is now in the summer, especially between June-July, when air conditioners are turned on.

The water shortages mean that hydroelectric power plants cannot work to full capacity, while water-cooled plants could also be in jeopardy if the drought continues.

On Monday, the ministry for economic development said it has agreed a series of measures to help tackle problems facing the power generation sector because of the drought.
