NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Seton Hall University School of Law is starting a new research and policy center believed to be the only one focused on legal issues affecting the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. The new Center for Health & Pharmaceutical Law, funded by a combined $8.1 million endowment from four big drug makers, is set to begin research this summer, said Denise Pinney, the school's assistant dean of health, science and technology law.She said research will include views of scholars, students, patients, doctors and politicians -- not just those of industry officials.'We would like to do so as a neutral academic institution,' Pinney said. The center will study business ethics and regulatory and enforcement issues, as well as other areas in the industry, which has a large presence in New Jersey. The university will soon start recruiting staff for the center, which will build on the law school's existing courses and other programs on health and pharmaceutical law, Pinney said.Further details are to be announced at a news conference Friday. The biggest donation, $5 million, comes from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., to endow a professorship in corporate governance and business, which the company was required to do to resolve a probe by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Also contributing are Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis and Schering-Plough Corp.Meanwhile, the New Jersey-based Gibbons law firm is donating $1 million to expand and rename what will now be the Gibbons Institute of Law, Science & Technology, whose focus includes other areas important to drug makers, such as patents.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
