NEW YORK (AP) - Exxon Mobil Corp. on Tuesday said it has drilled the world's longest oil well, boring seven miles through the sea floor offshore eastern Russia. The well, called Z-11, is located off the coast of Sakhalin Island in the north Pacific Ocean. At 7.01 miles long, Z-11 just barely breaks a record previously held by BP PLC. The British oil company in 1999 drilled a well 7.007 miles long off the coast of England. The new record well reached what Exxon Mobil terms a 'total measured depth' of 37,016 feet, or about 7 miles. 'Total measured depth' is an oil industry term for how far the drill bit traveled to reach the reservoir. It is a measure of depth and length combined, used to describe wells where the company has drilled horizontally and at angles in addition to straight down.Exxon Mobil estimates the entire Sakhalin project -- which covers the Chayvo, Odoptu and Arkutun Dagi fields -- has potential recoverable resources of 2.3 billion barrels of oil and 17.1 trillion cubic feet of gas.Exxon Mobil said it finished drilling Z-11 in 61 days, 15 days ahead of schedule and below expected cost.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
