NEW YORK (AFX) - Bayer HealthCare, a U.S. unit of German drugmaker Bayer AG, said Thursday it will stop three clinical trials studying the use of the blood-loss drug Trasylol beyond its approved use in heart bypass surgery.U.S. shares of Bayer AG fell $1.50, or 2.6 percent, to $55.95 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The company said it will stop the ongoing studies testing the safety and effectiveness of Trasylol in spinal fusion surgeries, cancer surgeries where a lung or the esophagus is removed, and cancer surgeries where the bladder is removed. Bayer said the decision was not based on any safety findings in the studies. In November, a data monitoring panel said the trials were safe to continue without any alterations.Trasylol is approved to reduce blood loss in patients undergoing heart bypass surgery who are at an increased risk for blood loss and blood transfusion. In December, the Food and Drug Administration approved new labeling which highlighted the risk of kidney damage associated with the drug. The drug has also been associated with an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and fatal allergic reactions.Trasylol sales accounted for $291 million out of Bayer's $34.7 billion in 2005 revenue.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
