LONDON (AFX) - European markets at closeLONDON (AFX) - Leading shares pared morning gains to close lower, as the weaker tone to Wall Street prompted investors to lock in profits after the index had earlier tested new 6-year highs, dealers said.By the close, the FTSE 100 index was 45.5 points lower at 6,269.3, having hit highs of 6,335.1 midmorning, while the broader indices were mixed.Volume was solid, with 2.94 bln shares changing hands in 433,767 deals.FRANKFURT (AFX) - German shares closed lower with most DAX-listed stocks losing and Lufthansa leading the index down.At 5.37 pm, the DAX 30 index was down 28.79 points or 0.43 pct to 6,719.58, after moving between 6,703.90 and 6,771.42.The MDAX lost 11.72 points or 0.12 pct to 9,717.85, while the TecDAX retreated 1.12 points or 0.14 pct to 804.45.PARIS (AFX) - Paris shares closed lower, reversing modest early gains as negative trade in the US prompted profit-taking and as Lagardere slid sharply after details eemrging from its investor day spooked the market.The CAC-40 ended down 28.88 or 0.51 pct at 5,609.20. Volume for the day was 6.5 bln eur.AMSTERDAM (AFX) - Shares in Amsterdam closed lower, suppressed by a negative Wall Street, while property stocks slid following a downgrade for the Dutch sector by JP Morgan, dealers said.The AEX closed down 0.69 pct or 3.52 points at 503.03, after trading in the range 502.15-506.55.MADRID (AFX) - Share prices closed flat after a lacklustre start on Wall Street, with Acerinox leading the losers, while Endesa and Gas Natural were higher, dealers said.The IBEX-35 closed down 3.4 points at 14,537.3, after trading in a range of 14,490-14,605 on volume of 6.0 bln eur.MILAN (AFX) - Milan shares closed slightly lower, dragged down by a weak opening on US markets, while RCS rose sharply higher after local broker Intermonte upgraded the stock to 'speculative buy' from 'underperform', dealers said.The Mibtel closed 0.18 pct lower at 32,605 and the S&P/Mib lost 0.26 pct to 42,457. Volumes totalled 6.0 bln eur.BRUSSELS (AFX) - Shares closed lower after telecoms group Mobistar fell over 2 pct, tracking profit-taking on Wall Street, traders said.The Bel 20 closed down 26.60 points or 0.60 pct at 4,438.55. Mobistar was down 1.70 eur or 2.47 pct at 67.15.ZURICH (AFX) - Share prices closed slightly lower in volatile trade tracking losses on Wall Street, with a weakness in heavyweight Nestle weighing, dealers said.At the close, the Swiss Market Index was 19.00 points lower at 9,134.10, and the Swiss Performance Index down 12.53 points at 7,227.50.STOCKHOLM (AFX) - Shares closed slightly higher underpinned by sharp gains for clothing retailer Hennes & Mauritz in the wake of its strong fourth-quarter results, but with Scania falling after its results amid concerns over its unresolved dividend policy, brokers said.The OMX Stockholm index closed up 0.41 pct at 387.07, and the OMX Stockholm 30 up 0.67 pct at 1,185.82. Turnover was 32.733 bln skr.
