Barr Pharmaceuticals challenges patents on Alcon's Patanol |

BOSTON (Thomson Financial) - Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. Thursday said its Barr Laboratories subsidiary has initiated a challenge of Alcon Inc. patents related to Alcon's Patanol, a treatment for allergic conjunctivitis.Barr said it received notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that its abbreviated new drug application for a generic version of Patanol, which it filed in June, was accepted for filing in September.Barr noted that on Wednesday, Alcon filed suit in U.S. District Court to prevent Barr from proceeding with the commercialization of its generic Patanol product.Shares Barr, the Woodcliff Lake, N.J.-based pharmaceutical company, were up 0.9% at $54.47.Michael Lauengerml/tk1COPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
