Dr. Reddy's gets generic Ambien approval |

NEW YORK (AP) - India-based generic drug developer Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. said Wednesday the Food and Drug Administration gave final approval for its generic version of Ambien.Ambien, made by Sanofi-Aventis, lost patent protection on April 21. Dr. Reddy's and several other companies had previously received tentative approval for a generic version of zolpidem tartrate. Final approval came when the patent expired.Other companies with approved generic versions of the sleep aid include: Mylan Laboratories Inc., Teva Pharmaceuticals, Roxane Laboratories Inc, Watson Laboratories Inc., Apotex Inc., Synthon Pharmaceuticals Inc., Genpharm Inc., Mutual Pharmaceutical Co., Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories Ltd., Carlsbad Technology Inc., and Lek Pharmaceuticals.Ambien sales totaled about $1.7 billion over the last 12 months, Sanofi-Aventis said Monday.Shares or Dr. Reddy's rose 11 cents to $17.25 on the New York Stock Exchange in midday trading.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
