MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Finmeccanica SpA said it has signed an agreement with Russian Railways (RZD) and the Russian scientific institute (VNIIAS) to cooperate in the rail signalling systems sector.

Ansaldo STS SpA, in which Finmeccanica has a 40 pct stake, will build a new rail signalling system, to be used on existing Russian rail lines and stations, Finmeccanica said in a statement.

'The agreement confirms the very good links that Finmeccanica has in Russia, a country that has repeatedly shown its interest in Italian technology,' said chairman and CEO Pier Francesco Guarguaglini.

'This deal reinforces the conviction that larger industrial cooperation projects can still be developed,' he said.

The Russian rail signalling system, already approved by VNIIAS, is called radio block centre, and is already used on Italy's high speed network, and can be used for all types of rail traffic, it said.

Finmeccanica and the Russian Federation has agreed a series of deals in the transport sector, including one last March on a rail safety and security system involving Finmeccanica unit Selex, it said.
