ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Roche Holding AG said it has signed a licensing agreement with Toyama Chemical Co to develop its oral rheumatoid arthritis agent T-5224 for worldwide research, development and commercialisation.Under the terms of the agreement, Toyama Chemical has granted Roche exclusive worldwide rights for the drug, excluding Japan where Toyama will retain its exclusive rights. The Swiss pharmaceutical group will pay upfront and milestone payments of up to 370 mln usd, with further royalties based on net sales.T-5224 is in Phase I testing, and may prevent the progression of rheumatoid arthritis in many patients, Roche said.Roche said it considers its emerging franchise in autoimmune diseases as one of the most important growth drivers for the group. Two weeks ago Roche reported positive phase III sutdy results for rheumatoid arthritis drug Actemra.Toyoma said that the deal would increase its potential in its core field of anti-inflammatory drugs.sarah.fenwick@thomson.comsf/jlc/sf/ejbCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
