NEW YORK: Intel Corporation claimed Wednesday it had made the world's first microchip using the 45 nanometer process technology. The development paves way for the top chipmaker to make more powerful, energy-conserving and efficient processors.
The new SRAM chip, the size of a fingernail and with 153 megabits of memory, has nearly one billion transistors that are only 45 nanometers wide.
Intel said it is very much on tracks to make computer processors using the new technology by the second half of 2007. The company has already started making from last year chips using 65-nanometer technology, which is the prevailing high tech standard in the semiconductor industry.
Chips based on 45 nanometer technology can improve battery life for mobile devices and have five times less leakage power.
The new chip has been developed at Intel's D1D facility in Oregon, where it will take up manufacturing too. In addition, Intel said the chips will also be made at its two fabs now under construction in Arizona and in Israel.
Intel said it also plans a low-power derivative of the 65-nm manufacturing process for handheld chips and chipsets.
