LONDON: Britain's mobile phone operator Orange is entering fixed line phone service targeting small businesses in the country. The move comes as a competition to market leader BT Group.
Orange, a part of France Telecom, said it will offer the service to both its old and new customers and position itself as a total communications provider. It is the first mobile services provider in the country to get into fixed line business.
It will be using the network of Cable & Wireless to provide the service, called Orange Landline for Business, and will charge up to 20 per cent less than what BT levies for its landline services.
Primarily, the focus will be on small and medium businesses, the company said. It will provide a single bill for the services taken and also offer rebates for calls between its mobile and landline phones. The service is due for launch in April.
The company plans to offer broadband internet service later this year. It hopes to have a market of around 4 billion pounds for its fixed line services.
BT is the only telecom company offering fixed line, mobile and internet services in Britain. It uses Vodafone's mobile network for its mobile service.
Meanwhile, France Telecom is merging Orange with another subsidiary, Wanadoo in Britain.
