LONDON - Online gaming industry took another hit after the chairman of World Gaming, a UK-listed online gambling company, resigned citing the increasing pressure put on by the US authorities on the gaming industry in the country.

Another non-executive director of the company resigned soon after citing similar reasons. Both James Grossman, the chairman, and Clare Roberts said that they feared for their safety after the arrests of chief executive of BetOnSports and the chairman of Sportingbet by the US officials. In a statement read out by their spokesman, World Gaming said that both the men were frequent travelers to the US. "Clearly they've got other business interests and they've got to be able to go to the US to be able to carry on their other business interests", he said.

Mr. Grossman holds US citizenship and also has worked for the US government and the United Nations while Mr. Roberts has been the Attorney-General and Justice Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

In July, the chief of BetOnSports, David Carruthers was detained by the US officials at the Dallas airport on racketeering charges. Another arrest soon followed, this time the chairman of Sportingbet, Peter Dicks was arrested in Texas, on the charge of "gambling by computer". Mr. Dicks has been allowed to return to UK on the condition that he will have to be present when the hearing takes place on the 28th of this month.
