PARIS (Thomson Financial) - Libya should be 'allowed' access to nuclear energy, French president Nicolas Sarkozy said on Friday.'The greatest risk to the world today is the clash between western and eastern civilisations. When the east no longer has gas and petrol, it must have development. If they are destitute, there will be terrorism,' said Sarkozy.Sarkozy added: 'If we take as a premise that they do not have a right to the energy of the future, nuclear energy, how would you avoid a war between civilisations, a war between the world of the rich and the world of the poor?''Naturally, they must be allowed to progress to nuclear energy,' he said.Earlier this month Sarkozy denied the existence of a plan to sell a nuclear power plant to Libya, following a report in a French newspaper that Libya had told power plant developer Areva it wanted to buy an European pressurised water reactor.helen.beresford@thomson.comafp/hem/gpCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
