Pfizer to appeal Canadian decision |

NEW YORK (AFX) - Drug developer Pfizer Inc. said Friday its will appeal a decision by a Canadian federal court denying its application to block approval of a generic version of the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor.India-based generic drug make Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. is asking for approval of its version of Lipitor. The ruling deals with a patent that Pfizer said holds market exclusivity until July 2010.The Canadian court did rule that another patent covering atorvastatin, which expires in May 2007, would be infringed by Ranbaxy, Pfizer said. Atorvastatin is the active ingredient in Lipitor, the world's best-selling drug.Shares of Pfizer fell 4 cents to $26.32 on the New York Stock Exchange in morning trading.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
