ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Syngenta said sources from Brussels have told the Swiss agri-chemical group that 'some EU commissioners' are not in favour of an alleged proposal by European Commissioner for the Environment Stavros Dimas to ban Syngenta's genetically modified Bt-11 maize products.'We don't want to speculate on rumours from Brussels, but our sources indicate that some commissioners are not in favour of Commissioner Dimas' draft proposal,' said Syngenta spokesman Medard Schoenmalckers.Syngenta has noted press reports yesterday claiming Dimas sent a draft proposal to ban two types of genetically modified maize, including Syngenta's Bt-11, which is already approved in the EU.'If they were to ban the maize, it would have a serious impact on the competitiveness of European farmers,' said Schoenmalckers.Syngenta is waiting for more information from the European Commission, he added.sarah.fenwick@thomson.comsf/jagCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
