JAKARTA (XFN-ASIA) - US mining firm Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc said its local subsidiary paid the government here a total of 1.6 bln usd last year, most of it in the form of taxes.'From January to December 2006, Freeport Indonesia paid its financial obligations to the government of Indonesia in the sum of 1.6 bln,' the firm said in a statement.It said 1.29 bln of the total comprised corporate, employee income and other taxes. Dividends accounted for 159 mln usd and royalties 146 mln usdIt added that Freeport Indonesia has paid 5.1 bln usd to the Indonesian government since 1992, with taxes accounting for 4.1 bln usd, and the remainder comprised of royalties and dividends.The company said Freeport Indonesia has also invested 5 bln usd to develop company infrastructure and 500 mln usd in social facilities, while generating direct employment for 9,000 people last year and 10,700 jobs indirectly.Freeport Indonesia, the local subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan, operates a large gold and copper mine in Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua, which environmentalists claim has caused significant pollution.The firm disputes the claims.afp
