WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - British drug maker AstraZeneca PLC said Monday it started a new late-stage clinical study to test the experimental drug Zactima in lung cancer patients as a second-line treatment. In the new study, AstraZeneca will enroll at least 508 patients with locally advanced or spreading non-small cell lung cancer for whom first-line treatment failed. Researchers will give the patients Zactima -- also known by the generic name vandetanib -- along with the Eli Lilly and Co. drug Alimta, or Alimta along with a placebo. The primary endpoint of the study will be to compare how long patients survive on the respective treatments without progress of the disease. The study, which started taking patients in January, will enroll patients in 20 countries including the United States.AstraZeneca already has three other late-stage clinical trials of Zactima under way.U.S. shares of AstraZeneca rose 6 cents to $57.25, and Lilly shares added 26 cents to $54.47 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
