BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Retail sales increased 16.9 pct year-on-year in February to 701.37 bln yuan, its fastest monthly pace since May 2004, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said.Urban retail sales surged 17.9 pct from a year ago to 476.22 bln yuan, according to a statement carried on the NBS website.Earlier this month, the bureau announced that China posted 14.7 pct retail sales growth in the first two months of the year but it did not give single month data for February.The National Development and Reform Commission said earlier that retail sales are likely to rise 12 pct this year.( 1 usd = 7.73 yuan )juan.chen@xfn.com
