NEW YORK (AP) - Alcatel-Lucent, which provides communications network support services, on Monday signed a $6 billion contract with wireless voice and data network provider Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone.

The three-year deal calls for Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent to supply a variety of equipment, software and services to support network expansion and other improvements Verizon Wireless. It also retains Alcatel-Lucent as the primary network infrastructure supplier to Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Verizon Wireless.

Work performed by Alcatel-Lucent will allow Verizon Wireless to increase the coverage and capacity of its broadband network and introduce new services, such as voice over IP, push-to-x and mobile video telephony, the companies said. It will also accommodate the Verizon's approach to multivendor interoperability of these systems and enhance existing networks.

Shares of Alcatel-Lucent rose 41 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $11.94 in premarket electronic trading, having closed Friday at $11.53 on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $10.63 to $16.51.
