Opel's Antwerp employees launch one-week strike |

BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Employees at Opel's Antwerp-based plant in Belgium have decided to launch a one-week strike -- until 3 May -- a trade union source confirmed.Night and early morning shift workers went on strike after they learned that Opel's parent company General Motors Corp plans to produce no more than 80,000 vehicles in Antwerp as of 2010 -- which they consider is insufficient to compensate the loss of the Opel Astra, which, as of 2010, will be produced at other plants.Factory workers and other employees have voted in favour of going on strike until next Thursday', when the next meeting with the European management of GM will take place at the group's German headquarters in Russelsheim, a trade union spokesman confirmed.On April 17, GM said it would make between 1,400 and 5,100 employees redundant before the summer, following a drop in Opel Astra sales.GM also decided not to produce its new Astra model in Belgium as of 2010, but rather at other plants in Germany, Poland, Sweden and the UK.antonia.vandevelde@thomson.comafp/ava/jfrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
