SYDNEY (Thomson Financial) - Australian upmarket department store operator David Jones Ltd said Thursday it rang up record sales on Wednesday, the first day of the traditional three-week clearance period, as consumers shrugged off concerns about rising interest rates to snap up discounted goods.

Tens of thousands of people passed through David Jones stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory. David Jones stores in other areas reopened today.

'We had a record day yesterday and we are really delighted with the customer response and trading,' Paul Zahra, general manager of stores at David Jones, told Thomson Financial.

David Jones expects to serve more than 1 million customers on the first day of the clearance period and estimates it will sell 500,000 towels, more than 200,000 women's shoes and more than 225,000 handbags over the three-week period, Zahra said.

David Jones' rival Myer also enjoyed a have ry, very solid day' yesterday, a spokesman for the department store chain said.

'We are expecting today to be the same,' he said.

Myer is no longer listed on the Australian Stock Exchange after Coles Group Ltd sold the retailer in June 2006 to a consortium led by private equity firm Newbridge.

David Jones and Myer both declined to provide exact sales figures.
