BANGKOK (XFN-ASIA) - The Thai military fears a rise in political tensions over the next two months that could lead to clashes, defense minister Boonrawd Somtas said.Thailand's military seized control of the country in a bloodless coup in September, but believes tensions between the new government and supporters of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra could peak in March or April.'The military's analysis is that the way political pressures are building at the moment, the situation will intensify in March or April,' Boonrawd added.'If we cannot contain the situation, it could lead to clashes and unrest could break out.'Boonrawd told reporters before the weekly cabinet meeting that the military fears rival political groups could stage mass protests in the coming weeks, and that the situation could get out of hand.He also accused Thaksin of continuing to finance his supporters' activities in Thailand, but declined to elaborate. The minister last week warned that Islamic separatists fighting the government in southern Thailand could stage an attack in the capital, similar to deadly blasts that hit Bangkok on New Year's Eve.Boonrawd said that security forces remain on alert for possible bombings in Bangkok, after several foreign embassies warned their citizens to exercise caution in the Thai capital.afp
