TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Unilever said it is to shut one of its two plants in Taiwan and move the production lines to other facilities in the region. The closure of the plant in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan, will be completed by the end of this year, a Unilever Taiwan spokesman said, adding the move will affect 130 local jobs.Production would be shifted to Unilever's units in China and southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, the spokesman said. The second plant with 100 employees in Hsinchu, also in northern Taiwan, would continue operations, he added.'Cost reduction is one of our considerations... the closure is aimed at maintaining the company's competitiveness,' the spokesman told AFP.'Unilever remains committed to the Taiwan market, which is still one of our important markets,' he added. The spokesman said the company has provided assistance to Taoyuan employees in finding new jobs and offered retirement programs as well as compensation packages better than the local labor law requirements.Unilever entered the Taiwan market in 1984, manufacturing a wide range of goods, including detergent, skin care and food products.afp/km
