MILFORD, Ind. (AP) - Plans for building an ethanol plant in northern Indiana's Kosciusko County have been dropped amid a campaign by some residents against its construction, a county official said.County Commissioner Brad Jackson said he was told South Dakota-based VeraSun Energy Corp. was backing off its plans even though it had been pursuing the site for a refinery since last summer.'VeraSun is evaluating several sites for ethanol production, including Milford, and they were looking at overall community support, local corn supply, transportation, utilities and other facets and have simply found other sites more suitable for their facility,' Jackson said.Lawns around the small town about 30 miles southeast of South Bend have been dotted for months with red and green signs of opposition or support for the plant. Opponents cited concerns about pollution, odors and increased traffic and submitted a petition to county commissioners with some 1,100 signatures against the project.VeraSun has options that expire May 1 to buy about 230 acres north of the town near two intersecting rail lines. The Associated Press left a message Tuesday seeking comment from a VeraSun spokesman.Jackson said he had met with VeraSun officials last week and was surprised by the company's decision. He said he had remained undecided about whether to support permitting the plan's construction.'There were a lot of facts for and against it that made a lot of sense,' he said. 'At the last meeting I had with them, I suggested they have a public meeting and present the facts to get people's reaction.'Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
