Star Scientific to appeal RJ Reynolds patent ruling

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Tobacco products maker Star Scientific Inc said it will appeal against a court ruling that it infringed a patent held by RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co, part of Reynolds American Inc.

Star Scientific said in a statement it was 'disappointed' and 'outraged'.

The US District Court ruled yesterday that Star Scientific engaged in inequitable conduct before the US Patent Office in obtaining patents involving a method of treating tobacco to substantially prevent the formation of tobacco-specific nitrosamines.
