LONDON: Jim Ratcliffe, chairman and chief executive officer of Ineos Plc., has been named the top entrepreneur by business publication Management Today. He has been credited with transforming Ineos into Britain's second largest chemical company with 15,500 employees in 14 countries through a deal buying BP Group's Innoven chemical business for 5 billion pounds earlier this year.
In nominating him to the top spot, Management Today described Ratcliffe, 53, as the "chemical industry's answer to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal". He beat Patrick McKenna, founder of Ingenious Media, an entertainment consultancy firm.
Ratcliffe's personal wealth is estimated at 1 billion pounds.
Management Today assessed the companies on the basis of their assets, growth in turnover of the past five years and percentage growth in the number of jobs created in five years.
Ingenious Media, planning a stock market listing and raising around 200 million pounds next year, has worked with several leading TV firms on major deals.
At No 3 position was Simon Nixon, founder of personal finance website Moneysupermarket.com.
The publication said the industries that attracted entrepreneurs were construction, financial services, telecoms and fashion. There were seven fashion entrepreneurs in the list -- including Monsoon founder Peter Simon and KL Bennett's Linda Bennett.
The youngest entrepreneur in the list was Thomas O’Donohoe, 27, of MX Telecoms, and the oldest Sir Arnold Clark, 78, car dealer.
Management Today editor Matthew Gwyther said the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the UK, and even more encouraging is "not only the wide diversity of market sectors those companies are operating in, but also that these entrepreneurs are now succeeding regardless of age, creed, nationality or background".
