LONDON (Thomson Financial) - An Indian supplier to clothing retailer Gap Inc has been found using child labour to produce items for Gap Kids branches in Europe and the United States, the Observer newspaper reported.

In reaction, Gap has withdrawn the garments from sale and will probe breaches of its ethical code, while anti-poverty campaign group War On Want has appealed for independent regulation of the sector.

The Observer conducted an undercover investigation which discovered Indian children as young as 10 years old working for a Gap subcontractor in New Delhi.

The weekly paper said that the child workers described long hours of unpaid work, threats and beatings, while they were producing blouses for the Christmas market -- to be sold at Gap's child-focused Gap Kids chain.

The hand-stitched tops would have each retailed at 20 stg, the paper said.

In response to the findings, Gap released a statement saying it was 'unacceptable' for children to produce its clothing.
