LONDON (AFX) - The UK rail industry improved reliability and punctuality in the third quarter of 2006-07 resulting in record levels of overall passenger satisfaction, according to the Office of Rail Regulation's national rail survey.A total of 81 pct of passengers were satisfied with their journeys in the period. Train performance was also up 2.9 pct on the same period last year to 88.4 pct.The improvements in punctuality were mainly down to the actions of train operating companies rather than Network Rail, ORR chief executive Bill Emery said.'Network Rail has achieved very significant reductions both in infrastructure failures and in levels of delay in the last three years, but these figures are no longer falling,' he said. 'The company needs to identify further opportunities to improve delivery in these areas.'Passengers were increasingly dissatisfied with levels of crowding on trains, however, according to the survey. ORR said operators were seeking ways to spread demand more evenly, but ultimately some expansion of capacity will be needed if long-term growth is to accommodated.Last week's train derailment in Cumbria is not included in the period covered by the review.paul.sandle@thomson.comps/rarCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
