SINGAPORE (XFN-ASIA) - International air passenger traffic grew 6.8 pct year-on-year last month, while cargo traffic was up 2.4 pct, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said.Average passenger load factors for Feb grew 0.5 pct from a year earlier to 73.3 pct with the Middle East region continuing to lead growth in demand.Cargo demand also rose sharply in the Middle East boosted by oil-led economic growth and increased capacity, IATA said.'However, high fuel costs and strong competition from other modes of transport continue to limit air freight demand in Europe, Africa, and Asia, particularly on shorter haul routes,' it added.IATA's director general and chief executive officer Giovanni Bisignani stressed the need for continued liberalisation of air traffic rights as the industry continues to grow.'The numbers say it all. People want to travel. Liberalisation is key to meeting demand for international air travel,' Bisignani said in a statement.(1 usd = 1.51 sgd)yuinmunn.szetoh@xfn.com
