GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) - Guyana was awarded a nearly $7 million grant Wednesday from a U.S. government program that helps countries implement economic and political reforms.The grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which was set up under U.S. President George W. Bush, will help Guyana set up its new value-added tax system, control spending and register new businesses, the MCC said in a statement.'We at MCC are pleased to help Guyana create an environment which will reduce impediments to economic growth,' program CEO John Danilovich said.The local office of the U.S. Agency for International Development will oversee spending of the grant in the South American nation.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
