EU steps up legal action against Malta on petroleum import monopoly |

BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - The European Commission said it has stepped up legal action against Malta for failing to abolish a monopoly for importing, storing and wholesaling petroleum products.The commission has sent Malta a letter of are asoned opinion', the second step in EU infringement proceedings. Malta now has two months to comply with EU law or the case may be referred to the European Court of Justice, Europe's highest court.The commission said Malta was supposed to have ended the monopoly on Jan 1 but so far has not done so.Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said: 'Malta is maintaining discriminatory measures in favour of the commercial state monopoly which stop any potential new entrants from getting into the wholesale petroleum market'.frances.robinson@thomson.comfr/bsdCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
