BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - The European Commission said it has closed infringement procedures against the Czech Republic over its application of the Competition Act.The commission has limited the Czech Competition Authority's power to apply Articles 81 (prohibiting cartels and other restrictive business practices) and 82 (prohibiting abuses of dominant position) of the EC Treaty relating to anti-competitive behaviour in the electronic communications sector. The EU executive issued a formal request to the Czech Republic to amend its legislation in March 2007, in the form of a so-called are asoned opinion'.The Czech Republic has now changed the relevant provisions of its Competition Act so that EU competition rules can now be fully applied in the electronic communications sector.Competition commissioner Neelie Kroes said: 'I welcome the fact that the Czech Competition Authority can now fully apply EC competition rules in the electronic communications sector. Empowering national competition authorities to apply EC competition rules was an important part of our anti-trust reform, and it is vital that these authorities are allowed to get on with the job.'nina.chestney@thomson.comnc/jagCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
