LONDON - UK mobile giant Vodafone has unveiled a vending machine that dispenses, yes you guessed it. mobile phones! The company appears to have taken the route followed by soft drink companies and has set up machines to distribute its pay-as-you-go products.
The QuickPhone kiosk will offer three sorts of Vodafone phones that are priced between £30 and £60 ($53.47 and $106.95). Additionally, a SIM (subscriber identity module) card-only pack can be brought for £5. The first of such vending machines will be put up in Vodafone stores in Manchester. The company said that these Quickphone kiosks could become a regular feature in railway stations, airports, music festivals and shopping centres.
"These will be popular with people who need a phone in an emergency, either because they have lost their phone or it has run out of battery," said a Vodafone spokesman. "They are for people who know what they want and who don't want to go through the rigmarole of talking to a sales assistant."
The kiosks will accept cash or credit cards and Vodafone says that the handset models will be changed every month depending on the current trends as well as the existing demand.
"Increasingly, more people know what they want from a phone and want to buy it when it suits them," said Tom Devine, the head of retail at Vodafone UK. The buyer does not have to submit his/her name and proof of address at the time of buying these phones, so they can be used anonymously.
