Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire provided some much-needed succor to the US box office by raking in $54.9 million (£32 million) over the Thanksgiving weekend to ensure that it continued to rule the roost.

The film took in $408 million (£239 million) across the globe and was the top grosser in all the countries where it was released. In the United States, the collections in the first two weeks have hit a record level bringing in $201.1 million. This is easily the best earnings by a Potter film and is surprising considering that the movie has been dubbed as the darkest yet in the Potter series. The adaptation of J K Rowling's hugely popular boy wizard is into its fourth movie and the Goblet of Fire has received a good response universally.

Harry Potter continued to rule over European markets even as many countries were hit by snowstorms and subsequent blackouts over the Thanksgiving weekend. It grossed $2.4 million in Belgium and $2.5 million in Holland. This is easily the biggest opening in Belgium and the fourth-biggest opening in Holland. Harry Potter was the second-biggest opening in Greece, where it took $1.3 million, while it collected $ 1 million in Argentina. The film is set to open in Australia, South Korea and France over the next week.

Elsewhere on the US box office, the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line stood second with earnings of over $20 million. Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo starrer, Yours, Mine & Ours was at the third position with estimated earnings of $17 million, while Chicken Little, Disney's animated film stood fourth with a take of $12 million.

"Flightplan" was at the second spot in the UK, followed by "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Chicken Little."
