MOSCOW: Russia's flagship carrier Aeroflot, which has floated tenders for long-haul aircraft in July, has closed on Boeing for 22 jets worth $2.5 billion, according to Russian business publications Tuesday.
According to one of the publications, Vedomosti, Aeroflot is looking at Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which is due in the market in 2008.
Meanwhile a senior Aeroflot official confirmed the decision and said the contract could be signed before the end of March 2006.
Another business daily Kommersant quoted an internal source at the European maker of Airbus as saying Aeroflot has decided to increase the number of aircraft to be bought from 22 to 28 and might buy from both Boeing and Airbus.
State-controlled Aeroflot is enhancing its fleet strength and in the interim, it had agreed to lease five Airbus A320 airliners. The carrier is also planning to replace its Tu-134 planes with foreign-made used aircraft.
Russia had faced problems after one of its home-built Ilyushin-96-300 planes developed snags and disrupted a flight, which was supposed to carry president Vladimir Putin. It had grounded all the Il-96-300 planes in August. Since then, the government had agreed to ease import restrictions on Boeing and Airbus planes.
