Apple has announced the release of the eagerly awaited iTunes 4.9. This software update supports podcasting. Apple CEO Steve Jobs had promised that the update would be released as soon as possible at D: All Things Digital last month.
In a statement Apple said, "With iTunes 4.9, you can now browse and subscribe to podcasts from within the iTunes Music Store. Podcasts are frequently updated radio-style shows downloadable over the Internet. You can also transfer podcasts to iPod, for listening on the go." The iTunes 4.9 has got a Podcast directory that will feature over 3,000 free audio programs. The directory includes favorites such as Engadget, Adam Curry, BBC, The Dawn and Drew Show, Clear Channel, Disney, ABC News, ESPN and Newsweek.
It is almost 10MB in size and can be accessed form the Apple menu by clicking on the Mac OS X Software Update mechanism. It is widely believed that new iPod models will soon hit the market. These new iPods are expected to offer an easy to use Podcast menu plus the ability to display color Podcast artwork.
Steve Jobs describes podcasting as the "hottest thing going in radio, hotter than anything else in radio". Commenting on the latest update, Jobs said, "Apple is taking Podcasting mainstream by building it right into iTunes. Podcasting is the next generation of radio, and users can now subscribe to over 3,000 free Podcasts and have each new episode automatically delivered over the Internet to their computer and iPod."
By using this update users can quickly find and subscribe to their favorite podcast. Apple says that every time there is an update, it's automatically downloaded to the users' Mac or PC and Auto-Synced to their iPod.
The iTunes 4.9 is available as a free download at www.apple.com/support/downloads
