BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Euro group president Jean-Claude Juncker said the top job at the International Monetary Fund may go to the developing world in future if it accepts former French finance minister Dominque Strauss-Kahn this time as the body's new managing director.'The next director will certainly not be a European,' Trichet told the FT Deutschland in an interview.'In the euro group and among EU finance ministers, everyone is aware that Strauss-Kahn will probably be the last European to become director of the IMF in the foreseeable future,' he said.Under an unwritten agreement, the EU has traditionally filled the IMF post, while the US has provided the head of the World Bank. But the nomination of Strauss-Kahn for the job has drawn criticism from several quarters, including the UK, arguing that it should go to a candidate from the developing world.Juncker noted that the UK did not oppose Strauss-Kahn's nomination at the time.'They have criticised the selection process and have said that we should have talked to others as well,' he said.'But we did talk to others as well,' he said.Poland had put forward former prime minister Marek Belka for the post.Meanwhile, Russia has nominated former Czech central banker Josef Tosovsky as an alternative candidate.victoria.main@thomson.comvm/gpCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
